Spills and stains are common occurrances. No reason to panic.
Rule No 1: Do not pour liquids on a stain
PASTY STAINS, fresh, or dried-up: first, remove excess with the dull edge of a knife, or a spatula. From a damp sponge, or cloth, dab a little water (*) into the stain. Follow, dabbing the affected area with a dry terry cloth. Repeat until no more stain transfer occurs to the towel. Change to dry area on towel frequently. If rubbing is necessary, use light pressure. Beware of excess, as this may cause damage to fabrics and carpet pile.
Liquid spills:
Step 1: Dab affected area with absorbent material (cotton towel, several layers of paper towel. Repeat until transfer stops. On carpet: place dry towel on stain, then step on it for increased pressure; repeat, changing to dry towel area place on stain.
Step2: Water based spills (drinks, etc.) Moisten clean terry towel (or utility sponge) with water(*) and dab some moisture on ca 2"x2" area of the stain, starting at the outer edge. Then dab the just moistened area with with dry (paper) towel. Repeat until no more stain transfer occurs. Proceed to the next portion of same size; continue until entire spill area has bee treated. Note (*) or a solution of one teaspoon of hand dishwashing detergent per quart of water. For greasy stains, use 2 teaspoonfuls of detergent per quart of water.
On carpet: when done, fluff pile with a coarse comb, edge of a coin, or table fork.
